I've just bought a rarther spiffing looking book entitled The Lore of the Land by Westwood and Simpson. Its labeled A guide to Englands Legends. And very much like our beloved website its divided into counties, so having a brief look at Lancashire i found a tale involving St Chads Church in Rochdale, now the tale of this church is virtually the same as the St Chads in Saddleworth with the foundation stones being moved overnight and so on. The authors mention this being a common theme in folklore. Anyone out there with any more legends of church foundations being moved around at night ?

On a side note the books only downfall so far is that it only covers England. ohhh and its £20....

St Chad's in Rochdale has a long history. Bits of it's wall date back to before the norman Conquest and the tower dates from 1190. It's cropped up a few times whilst I have been researching my family tree.....not I admit to have Rochdalians in the brood.

£20 isn't too bad for a big book, providing it's got plenty material in it. I don't begrudge paying just that little bit extra for a mighty tome. Probably because of what it is.

Ian, it mentiones the Church at Rochdale being there during the reign of William the C. Not sure how old St Chads at Saddleworth is. The differences in the story are, at Saddleworth, Fairys or Pagans are blamed for moving the stones, but in the Rochdale tale it was God that was moving them.
Looking at the index, there are more tales of this sort. Sorry for being blinkered .

To be honest Urisk, I was happy to pay £20 for it, it's A5 ish size softback and has 847 pages before the 50 page bibliography and index and seems to be high quality paper. Its also small print as a good reference book should be Smile

Merry Yule all.

p.s. Its got a few bits on Vampires too Smile

hmm £15.49 from Play.com - not bad and the reviews are good too!
I might get a copy too
