Do ghostly apparitions actually make a noise? If they are physical manifestations of a lost soul or some sort of hallucination, it should not preclude them from being accompanied by some sort of noise, or even a smell. Do ghosts go WOO? I’m probably wrong, but I can’t remember coming across an apparition that was both seen and heard or smelt.

Neither can I. Ian, how do get these questions? Do they just come to you while eating your corn flakes?

Are talking about a distinct noise every single apparition makes or just in general?
There are a number of ghosts which are supposed to make particular noises or to leave peculiar smells.
I have already in the past the (Continental) Celtic legend of the Santa Compana, the souls being led to the afterlife who are supposed to either pray or sing and accompanied by the smell of burning candles (old tallow candles being rather more unpleasant than the modern, scented ones).
In Rome there's a place near the Aurelian Walls where prostitutes, thieves and other "unwanted" persons were buried. According to local tradition the souls of two revolutionaries beheaded in 1825 (buried here because they refused the Final Rites) walk near the old cemetary on certain nights, a terrifying sight. Yet they are harmless and if somebody will approach them on friendly terms they will even tell him the numbers to score a lotto win!
A much better researched case (again by the same CNR team which investigated the Hessdalen Lights and other cases) comes from a castle in Romagna. Here the ghost of a child, lost and never found, is accompanied by sobbing sounds, cries and the sound of distant bells (of course there are no bell towers nearby). The CNR mounted three expeditions in 1990, 1995 and 2000 and in each occasion extremely interesting sound recordings were obtained.
I'm currently looking for a link: they are quite interesting...

I know of a few stories where noises - such as heavy footsteps - have been associated with apparitions. There's also a number of variations on the black dog stories that contain specific reference to a sound, such as the dragging of chains, accompanying the spectral beast.

I'll keep a diary of when these questions pop in my head, maybe we'll find a pattern Suspect

There are lots of hauntings where noises are heard but for an actual apparition to be seen making a noise? It is common enough on the TV to see ghosts talking or rattling chains, but is it just a myth?

Somehow Mauro I just don't beleie in a ghost that gives the lotto numbers out. If I'm wrong though I am moving to Rome Very Happy

Is the child seen and heard to be sobbing at the same time and is the apparition the source of the sobbing?

Romans are literally obsessed with lotto Ian: they have three weekly extractions! They have any concievable method to divine the "winning" numbers and even the souls of the departed ones are dragged into the picture. I've spent very little time in Rome but, believe me, they are weird! No wonder Rome boasts enormous numbers of apparitions (the most famous one are probably the emperor Nero and the celebrated poet John Keats).

The CNR investigators didn't experience any apparition, they just heard and recorded the sobbing sounds and the bells. Witnesses of the apparition are few and far between, mostly because that area of the castle has been used for storage for quite a few decades. Those who saw the ghost describe her as a little girl "light blue in colour". Now where did I put that link?

I don't know if the machanics being seeing a ghost and seeing a clairvoyant image is vastly differant, but I can say that the images I saw were silent and I never saw one cause a noise to happen.

I've discovered that a gentle soul (no pun intended) uploaded the audio files to Wikipedia saving me the trouble to surf the Internet:

1990 recording

1995 recording

2000 recording

This is a 2005 recording from another source. I've been told the castle owners are making a nice profit by allowing tour groups on their premises, showing them the place where "it really happened" and airing the aforementioned recordings.

I recall reading in a wee book on Scottish ghosts a particular "haunting" of a "black- hoose" and it's family by a poltergeist that used to converse with the youngest daughter as well as scream and shout. There were exorcisms and the like but I think eventually the haunting stopped of its own accord. Or the family moved or something.

Apart from that I don't think I've heard of a physical manifestation making vocalisations.

I live with a ghost who is almost entirely heard rather than seen. On the rare occasions when he does turn up in any visual form, it is in complete silence. Maybe he was a quiet man in life?

I think this is pretty much what I would expect Wombat. A haunting can be noisey, but when an apparition is I seen I think it is usually silent.
