| Will o` the Wisp? Location: Timperley Brook, Salisbury Field, Altrincham, Cheshire. At the above location is a flood barrier which is raised when the brook is in flood to protect property further downstream, when in full spate the stream can be twelve foot deep as the waters back up. As a safety precaution metal rails have been installed on top of the concrete construction. It is one of these rails that emits an orange glow on approach, a slightly pulsating glow, a light that normally increases intensity on approach but not always, sometimes it will just appear and switch off as if it were a domestic electric bulb manually turned on or off. I have observed this for over two months whilst walking the dogs, I`v looked for every explanation, reflection of neon lights, other people with torches, I have witnessed it under all weather conditions, overcast, full moon, half moon, no moon just stars, rain, dark nights and misty nights and from every angle. I needed a witness so took the wife along, she observed the same and we repeated one of my exercises, on approaching the railing it would illuminate quickly or gradually, within twenty yards the glow would suddenly disappear, at this point we would stop and backtrack eyes fixed on the rail expecting to see it once again illuminate, no, we had to retreat beyond the initial observation and then walk back and again witness the light playing its tricks. To the side of the brook is a permanent wet area some twelve to eighteen inches deep, a hundred and fifty yards away the brook passes under the Bridgewater Canal. In the past I have witnessed the actions of poltergeist and observed what I believe to be ufo`s with admiration, the above has spooked me a little yet I still walk that way and it doe`s not seem to disturb the dogs. An important part of my job is to observe the highway from a safety issue. Keith Brown | |

| Hi and welcome, Hovy. I'm not sure what exactly you mean, when you talk about the rails. Do you mean they are lit up rails, but there is a strange glow that is also present? Will o' the Wisps (or Spunkies up here) certianly have been reported for a long time, and have roots in our own folklore. They have been attributed to the methane in swamps and bogs igniting which does happen(also, remember the "corpse candle" scenario in the Lord of the Rings, the book and the film?). However, I can't really offer much more information. | |

| IS this day and night? At might the glow might be seen more easily or it could be from various light sources. If the glow is lost on approach then it may just be a visual effect. Is it visible from all angles? is the route used often - are there any other people around to witness it? Have you contacted the owners of the property to maybe find out if they know what would cause the glow?
motion sensitive security lighting can switch on and off causing such an effect, are you sure there are no installations like that in the area?
photographs of the installation and glow would help a lot, especially if it is an ongoing phenomenon.
I'd be interested as to what you find out.

| Hi Hovy, welcome to the forum and thank you for posting your experience. I'm really not sure what to make of this. There has certainly been a number of light related phenomena associated with bodies of water as Urisk mentioned. With this always being associated with the railing it makes me think there will be a natural explanation somewhere, whether it be a set light source (though I imagine you would have noticed one by now) or even some kind of glow in the dark paint. If you have a digital photograph of the glowing railing and surrounding area it would be very interesting. | |

| Hi Hovy and welcome. To be honest with you I have only three possible explanations. The first one is that there is a light somewhere in the vicinity playing tricks. Getting closer may be enough to change prospective and have the reflection disappear. The second one is the classic St Elmo's fire, though it's quite weather related. The thirs one is the possibility of a particular light-emitting moss: the contain a protein called GFP that allows them to give off a faint light. | |

| Hi there Hovy, interesting thing you have here. Could you perform a small experiment please ? you may of already tried this of course. Go to the location with your wife and one of you stay where you first see the glow, then the other approach it, the first person will then be able to see the glow stop or not when the second nears it.
Best regards
Lee. | |

| Thank all of you for the response, more than I expected , first Urisk, the rails are not naturally illuminated, the strange glow emanates from the structure itself.
Cheers. | |

| Hi Stephen,
The glow appears from low dusk and through the darkness of the night, all angles and light sources have been investigated and none explain the apparition. The route I walk every evening, as written the bright orange glow behaves independently, switching on and turning off, backtrack, motionless, walk forward, sideways and every way which, it does its own thing.

| LeeWat,
Thanks for your reply, we have both walked together and observed the same odd events, take your advice and part at that certain point.

| Hi Ian
Thank you for your welcome, the taking of pictures will prove little other than pin pointing the location, how does one capture a light flicking on or off.

| hmm sounds like a few more people need to see this thing, armed with a video camera if possible. sounds like it needs to be witnessed independently from all angles with a group of people to pinpoint what is seen where.
Photos might still help if planned out correctly in a grid pattern to see what is causing the light - is it the witness causing it or something else...

| Although you have done a good job describing the events and location it is hard to come up with further suggestions without I suppose visiting the site itself. Please keep us intouch with anything else you experience or uncover about the railings. Maybe others will see thes posts who know the area and will be able to help shed some more light on the matter. | |
