As far as I understand they are essentially, or were, classed as a "faerie". In other words grouped in with other supernatural beings that our ancient ancestors had no other way of classifying. If we see someone who looks like us or someone we know, then we naturally call them a "doppelganger", but in its truest sense, this was meant o indicate an exact replica, and a lookalike will never be this.

If that makes sense Laughing

Urisk is right in mentioning shapeshifting ("We can make the small big, the big small and the old young") as one of the many abilities of the denizens of Magonia. Changelings are only one and perhaps the best known of such faerie powers.
Allegedly even such an illustrious man as Wolfgang Goethe saw his own doppelganger, but I haven't been able to trace this occurence in his autobiographic writings.
There's one interesting occurence though, which took place at the infamous Willington Mill, near Newcastle upon Tyne, around 1840.
During this haunting a perfect body double of one of the children inhabiting the house was produced by an unknown agent. The "doppelganger" allegedly appeared twice: the first time it materialized under the child's bed while he was sleeping and the second time it appeared in the child's bedroom, again while the child was bed (though not asleep this time) and kept pacing forth between a wardrobe and a large mirror until it faded into nothingness, never to appear again.
Scary if true.

So cld a "genuine" doppleganger be the spirit of a living person, seen by others at that time for whatever reason it chose to leave the physicalbody (even in absence of sleep)

The Willington Mill haunting is extraordinary, so extraordinary in fact that one of the first reactions would be to dismiss it as a huge, elaborate hoax.
Every single paranormal phenomenon known to man (or nearly so) happened during the eleven years of the hauntings: from simple rappings on the walls to unbelievable pieces of materialization, like the child doppelganger or even a monkey which appeared out of nowhere only to disappear into nothingness when the children set out to hunt for it.
As Brad Steiger rightly (and perhaps sarcastically) remarked the most unbelievable event was how long the Procter family resisted in face of these unexplainable events before abandoning the mill.

Angel, I think you may find the following case interesting. Try digging out a picture of that celebrated medium, Florence Cook, and then look for a picture of her famous ghost-guide, Katie King.
You'll immediately notice how similar they are.
Of course the first reaction would be pretty simple: "it's the medium dressing up!". Sir William Crookes, the famous physicist and chemist who investigated into the whole affair, has often been suspected of "covering up" for Florence.
Moreover, after Katie announced that she was leaving Florence in 1875, the medium found herself a new spirit-guide, Marie.
A scandal of enormous proportions broke out when in 1880 Sir George Sitwell grabbed Marie during a seance, ordered the lights turned on and discovered that the girl-guide was really the medium in her underwear, clad in a light veil.
Yet Katie appeared in many other seances where Florence was not present, including a number after her death (1904). Her last known apparition was at seance in Rome in 1974: Katie greeted the presents by holding their hands and kissing them on the forehead, then talked with the medium, hugged him and left him a bouquet of flowers (another piece of sophisticated materialization) as a farewell present.
Was Katie King a fraud, a true spirit or piece of materialization generated by Florence Cook? If so how could her appear over and over again when her creator was long dead?
